NodeBB is at this year's FediForum, and one of the breakout sessions centred around the Theadiverse, the subset of ActivityPub-enabled applications built around a topic-centric model of content representation.

Some of the topic touched upon included:
  • Aligning on a standard representation for collections of Notes
  • FEP-1b12 — Group federation and implementation thereof by Lemmy, et al.
  • Offering a comparatively more feature-rich experience vis-a-vis restrictions re: microblogging
  • Going forward: collaborating on building compatible threadiverse implementations
The main action item involved the genesis of an informal working group for the threadiverse, in order to align our disparate implementations toward a common path.

We intend to meet monthly at first, with the first meeting likely sometime early-to-mid April.

The topic of the first WG call is: Representation of the higher level collection of Notes (posts, etc.) — Article vs. Page, etc?

Interested?
  • Publicly reply to this post (NodeBB does not support non-public posts at this time) if you'd like to join the list
  • If you prefer to remain private, please email julian@nodebb.org

As an aside, I'd love to try something new and attempt to keep as much of this as I can on the social web. Can you do me a favour and boost this to your followers?

@julian I get that, but a lot of really bad habits will likely be impossible to rectify later. Not suggesting anyone be forced to implement anything, but it's another case were "best practices" would avoid a lot of unforced errors. Whether they see categories as random topics, or controlled vocabularies for any particular mission, some skilled librarians might be invited to describe some of those and provide working examples. This won't matter for stand-alone communities, but it might matter a lot for federated communities looking to optimize their knowledge sharing and distribution as things evolve.

@shoq NodeBB is designed to be flexible enough to allow you to construct a hierarchy that makes sense for your particular community.

One's interpretation may not match others', and that is ok. We've found that being overly opinionated in implementation forces you into a corner and leads to feature requests asking for exceptions.

Thanks for posting the link to the spreadsheet. I have added several platforms to it.

Is this spreadsheet about what users call it, or what is sent via ActivityPub? Because in many cases that is different.

For example, Hubzilla has "channels," "posts" & "comments," (and "forums" are a specific type of "channel,") but that is not necessarily what gets sent over ActivityPub or Zot protocol. Instead, channels are treated as an ActivityPub user, and posts are either sent as "ActivityStreams Notes" or "ActivityStreams Articles" depending on the installation. Comments are the only one that matches, since they are sent as "ActivityStreams Comments."

Since you asked for terminology, I assume you mean what users call these things. But it may be useful to collect information about how these are sent over ActivityPub since that may be different.
Sorry, you have got no notifications at the moment...
