Who called it "the Fediverse" when "the ActivityPublic square" was right there?

@evan
I'd rather give it a more restrictive definition : " all the actually decentralized and independent servers giving access to softwares working on the ActivityPub ". So, that would exclude Threads. And the
#Fediverse
brings together the
#fediversians
, the beautiful name of our tribe.

The Hubzilla addon that activates ActivityPub is called PubCrawl. :)

The exact meaning of Fediverse is up for debate. Most people think of it as the people on independent platforms that connect via ActivityPub (
i.e.
Mastodon,
et. al.
), but some of the early platforms on the original "fediverse" did not start with ActivityPub and don't use ActivityPub exclusively. And, for the record, Mastodon didn't even start with ActivityPub either. Basically, the oldest fediverse software is older than ActivityPub.
So we get weird situations where fediverse software older than Mastodon does not have ActivityPub enabled. Is it part of the fediverse or not? Their software literally pioneered the fediverse, so it feels weird to not consider it part of the fediverse, but it might not connect with Mastodon and the rest of the fediverse since it has its own protocol and ActivityPub is optional.
The term fediverse has always been a bit nebulous.

I do agree with every explanation given in your answer. I know
@news
, the software is older than ActivityPub, indeed, and integrates other protocols . My purpose is excluding instances controlled by big unreliable and unaccountable platforms like Threads, regardless of the protocol they use.

One way of defining it is:
Social Web
= Any platform that connects with others via ActivityPub, Nomad, Zot, AT Protocol, etc. Includes social media, blogs, forums, groups, etc.
Fediverse
= The open source version of the social web featuring small independent instances.
Indie Web
= Independent operators, may be for profit or not-for-profit. May be open source or proprietary. Includes content creators and independent blogs.
Indie Social Web
= Includes WordPress blogs, small businesses with social media instances, small social media websites, forum communities, etc. that are on the social web.
Big Social
= Any commercial platform or company that is not classified as a small business by most country's standards.
And then, of course, you would have protocol specific networks, such as ActivityPub, Zot, Nomad, etc..
