Hubzilla on shared webhosters?

Folks; title says it all I guess: Is it possible / a good idea to try and run a Hubzilla hub on a shared webhoster environment? Specifically, I keep most of my stuff in webspace rented from all-inkl in Germany these days, which works for most of my needs but doesn't offer shell/root access (and thus, too, no system cron which seems an issue with hosting other tools too). Would Hubzilla work in such an environment...? Or should I better stay away from it?

I can confirm that Hubzilla will work on shared hosts, but you need both shell access and cron jobs. Cron jobs are usually available on shared hosts that have a user interface (cPanel, Plesk, etc.). But whether you get shell access depends on the web host.

For many hosts, shell access is disabled by default, but if you open a ticket and request it, they will turn on jailshell for you. (Jailshell gives you command line access to your account only.)

@Scott M. Stolz "jailshell" is such a fitting term!
- and jailcron, then?

@_jayrope Jail Shell is a security tool that many web hosts install on their shared servers. I believe Jailshell is open source, so you can add it to almost any Linux server.

Since (in most implementations) cron runs a shell command, it is only jailed if the shell is jailed.

If you are on a web host that uses WHM/cPanel, Jailshell is already installed on the server. Enabling shell for a user automatically gives them jailshell access (so they can't mess with anyone else's data on the server and execute undesired commands).
Sorry, you have got no notifications at the moment...
