What happens now? I think that is on everyone's mind. At least 68 million people are unsatisfied with this election, and those are just the people who voted. And, for the record, I am unsatisfied too. A lot of people are afraid for their safety and freedom. And I am afraid too, although perhaps for different reasons.
One great thing about the United States is that the President or any one political party can't do anything they want. There are checks and balances, separation of power, and there are limitations built into the U.S. Constitution. Some of these have been eroded away over the years, but they are still there.
The fact that the United States is a federal union also makes it harder for any one political party or politician to take over. Most domestic laws are under the jurisdiction of the states, and laws vary considerably by state.
While this can be frustrating for your party and those who want them to take absolute power, it also prevents the other party from erasing your party and erasing everything you do off the map.
So, after we all calm down a bit, it is time to think about what is next. And what is next is using the structures of limited government in your favor. Use the courts to block laws that violate your rights and seek justice in the courts when your rights are violated. Take advantage of the fact that the United States is a union of states and get your state and local politicians to take action. Oppose federal overreach of power. And work to get your rights enshrined in your State's Constitution, if not already there.
Civics may have been a boring topic in high school, if your school even taught it to you, but knowing how the government works is vital for protecting yourself and the ones you love from abuse at the hands of the government and opposing political parties & politicians.
So, while this all seems hopeless and depressing and frustrating to many, there is hope, and there are things that can be done.
This may not be the outcome that many of us, including myself, wanted. But we are not completely powerless.
